Leaf by Oscar Corojo Gordo
December 26th, 2016
When you get a Leaf by Oscar cigar, the first thing you notice is the packaging. Rather than settling for traditional cellophane or even paper wrappers (like those on OSOKs and the Room 101 Big Chief Cool Arrow), the Leaf is actually bound up in a tobacco leaf. That makes getting to the cigar kind of like unwrapping a gift.
After unwrapping, my cigar smells like a wonderful Corojo, with lots of spices in the aroma. Upon cutting and lighting, those spices do not disappoint. There’s a light bite of pepper on the tongue, and a more complex spice profile on the retro-hale.
The construction of the cigar is nearly immaculate, with some slight veins in the wrapper. The burn, meanwhile, is very even and slow.
An undercurrent of coffee emerges at the one-third mark, adding a very nice touch to the flavor. Around this time, slight canoeing starts, but is easily corrected.
By the two-thirds point, leather notes become predominant, sublimating the spices and settling the Gordo into a nice medium-strong profile that is very pleasant. The cigar produces plenty of smoke.
If you're a fan of Corojos, this one is a must try. I’ve previously smoked the Lancero, and would say that both it and the Gordo are outstanding cigars.
I give a solid 9/10 for this one. Joe Bob says, “Check it out.”
