SSIMC IntroAugust 21st, 2017

Odd as it may sound, my non-smoking wife discovers the best cigar lounges! She won't give away her secrets. But I can and will share with you some places she found on our recent trip to Nashville.

We traveled to Nashville because my youngest son had gone there while chasing a girl he ultimately caught, but didn't keep. Beside the point. The wife loves country music, and was excited to ‘stroll Broadway and listen to music’. Me, not so much. However, we've been married going on seventeen years, and she knows how to get her way. Give me a cigar and a couple of drinks, and I'll follow her anywhere!

Dungeon CH 1July 10th, 2017

Prague is as cool and full of Old World mystique as you have ever seen in movies. It’s the capital of the Czech Republic, and is a popular tourist destination every summer. While women might gush with excitement over shoes and purses, I found myself gushing over an insanely cool cigar lounge, several levels below the street, in a dungeon. Yeah, a freakin’ dungeon!

The Hotel U Prince lies 75 feet away from the major tourista magnet of the 600 year old Astronomical Clock (yawn). Down in the hotel’s basement (as in down four flights of stairs, into the bowels and foundations, constructed centuries ago with big arches) is Black Angel’s Bar.

The mood inside is like jumping into some kind of spy novel, where arch villains lurk in the dark recesses of exotic chambers. And you get to smoke here!!! How cool is that? Black Angel’s Bar could well be the world’s most interesting haunt for cocktails and cigars.

LA Pic 1July 3rd, 2017

When my wife and I rented a house in the Hollywood Hills for a week, I had already resigned myself to it being a stogie-free stay. After all, we were in Los Angeles. Imagine my surprise when, in fact, I was able to find a number of places to light up.

ECCT IntroMay 15th, 2017

10 days, 2900 driving miles, over 300 cigars acquired and 60-plus smoked along the way.

I always say that cigar people are nicest people you'll ever meet. And on this trip, we were fortunate enough to spend time with some really exceptional ones. We made new friends, met up with old ones and visited some very nice locations for buying and enjoying cigars.

My lovely wife, AKA ‘Lady A’, was my companion the whole way, and she helped me tweet photos of the cigars that I smoked as well as photos of some of the great places we visited. We also managed to play 25 games of pinochle with Aunt Virginia and Uncle Bob in Lakeland (when we got to Florida) – all around, a very productive exercise. However, the girls beat the boys in the tie breaking game 13-12.

DE Safari 2017 1May 8th, 2017

I've been blessed by the generosity of Jonathan Drew a few times. Anyone who's met him knows how welcoming he is. He’s an instant friend. His ability to create blends is truly a unique gift. Jonathan also has a knack for bringing just the right people into the Drew Estate family. And ‘family’ is just what the Drew Estate enterprise is.

Those who work on staff in the U.S. are full of personality. Each is a superstar in his or her own right. Many I consider friends. A few I consider brothers.

My Trip to Cuba https://cigarweekly.com/lifestyles/travel-entertainment/458-trip-cuba https://cigarweekly.com/lifestyles/travel-entertainment/458-trip-cuba

My Trip to Cuba 1March 9th, 2017

First of all, a huge ‘thank you’ goes out from me to Cigar Weekly’s BigJohn, who pointed me in the right direction. John, I definitely had a great visit to Cuba![Glad you enjoyed your Smooth Draws's tour!!]

About eleven of us gathered at Miami International Airport on a Sunday morning. There, we met Nick Syris. Nick had our visas and boarding passes all ready. The company he’s with is responsible for Smooth Draws, a radio program that broadcasts out of Atlanta.

While I’m from Dunedin, Florida, some of the other people I met – Amy, Lane, Don, Susan, Carmen and Edwin – were all from Denton, Texas. Also onboard were Don and Sandy from Virginia.

Fine Dining... and CIGARS!!! https://cigarweekly.com/lifestyles/travel-entertainment/207-dining-cigars https://cigarweekly.com/lifestyles/travel-entertainment/207-dining-cigars

Fine Dining and CIGARS 1In anticipating a recent trip to New York City, I had two concerns before I got there – one, that the Anti-Smoking Nazis would have taken the joy out of traveling away from home and two, that if, if, IF N.Y.C. had a private cigar club, it would be some membership place with steep initiation fees, which would inhibit out-of-towners.

Low and behold, I used my app from Cigar Aficionado, called ‘Where to Smoke’, plugged in Manhattan, and looked for places on the East side, Mid-town.

Our (I was traveling with my spouse) quest was rewarded, and then some! In addition to the great Carnegie Club (a place I've previously reviewed), we found Club Macanudo at 26 E 63rd Street, New York, N.Y. 10065, located at the corner of Madison Avenue and 63rd.

Cabo San Lucas: A Tale of Two Cities https://cigarweekly.com/lifestyles/travel-entertainment/184-cabo-a-tale-of-2-cities https://cigarweekly.com/lifestyles/travel-entertainment/184-cabo-a-tale-of-2-cities

FullSizeRender1The reason we went to Cabo the first time was because of Cigar Weekly. CW used to hold contests that determined a 'Member of the Month'. And from those winners, an annual 'Member of the Year' was then chosen. The 'grand prize' was a week's stay at one of the then owner's timeshare there.

I never actually won MOTY. But the late and truly great Toje (Steve Faccenda) did. He won the week in Cabo from Cigar Weekly, but gave it to me, even though our friendship was only through CW and we had never met face to face. Never having met him in person before he passed truly remains one of my life's regrets.

So my wife and I went to Cabo. We loved it so much that we bought a place of our own there, and have been going pretty much every year since for the last fifteen years.

And Guns Too https://cigarweekly.com/lifestyles/travel-entertainment/173-gun-too https://cigarweekly.com/lifestyles/travel-entertainment/173-gun-too

Editors Note:

This content/article is submitted by Jason Breeden, aka @gun_carry on twitter. Jason is a cigar smoking, gun toting follower of ours in the social media space, and has offered this article up as his first submission. Cigar life is not just about cigars, but also about the other things we enjoy with, before and after our cigars - as you've probably already noticed by all the spirits, beer and food articles!

The article's original title, "Covert Media Day", has been changed here to "And Guns Too" to fit the theme of Cigarweekly. (The original would have been confusing given the title of our magazine.) This article is edited for our format. To read the article in its original format, please see the link at the bottom.

Covert Media Day 5/28/15 Charles City VA

AB Arms charles city va picture

One of our firearms industry media contacts recently received an invitation to a private range event to take a look at a new Remington 700 configuration from American Built Arms Company, called the Mod X. Other products would also be represented. And while my general point of view is that of a CCW pistol user, the event was close by and still worth a look. To provide a rifle shooter/hunter perspective, I thought bringing my father along would be a good idea.

As it turned out, the Covert Media Day was a hive of innovation that sparked interest in many unexpected areas. Also, the name was fitting as we were originally given coordinates for the shoot rather than an address.

The Stanley Hotel: The Perfect Road Trip https://cigarweekly.com/lifestyles/travel-entertainment/149-stanley-hotel https://cigarweekly.com/lifestyles/travel-entertainment/149-stanley-hotel

The Stanley Hotel 1This past Christmas, my buddy and I came up with an idea. Get together with a group of friends, and road trip to Estes Park, Colorado. Our reason? To stay at the historic Stanley Hotel.

The building, designed by Freelan Oscar Stanley, opened for business on July 4th, 1909. Many notable dignitaries, musicians, actors and writers have stayed at the Stanley throughout its illustrious history.

My Miami Cigar Adventure https://cigarweekly.com/lifestyles/travel-entertainment/129-miamicigaradventure https://cigarweekly.com/lifestyles/travel-entertainment/129-miamicigaradventure

My Miami Cigar Adventure - Intro Image

My alarm, as planned, goes off at 3 o’clock in the morning. But Murphy's Law soon intervenes. An e-mail on my phone informs me that the Dulles to Newark leg of my flight to Miami has been cancelled due to mechanical issues. A quick call to my after-hours travel agent results in a new agenda – Miami via Chicago with a 6 A.M. flight out of Reagan. I race through my morning ritual, grab my worn red suitcase, throw it in the jeep and hit the road.

When my plane approaches Chicago’s O’Hare, the captain announces, “It’s 5 degrees in the Windy City. Thank you for flying United.”

I think to myself, “Awesome, because I’m heading to Miami!” You can keep the snow in Chicago.

A Trip to Cuba https://cigarweekly.com/lifestyles/travel-entertainment/73-christophe-st-peter-chris12381 https://cigarweekly.com/lifestyles/travel-entertainment/73-christophe-st-peter-chris12381

I have traveled to Cuba six times now. I studied in Cuba in 2003, for a month, and in 2004, for a semester, with a few other more recent trips mixed in here and there.

All of my trips were legal ones; a point that should not be overlooked.

The fact that many of my trips came years apart should also not be overlooked. After several changes in the law and regulations, I was unable to return to the island legally. In the past few years, however, these restrictions have eased and I'm allowed to return as part of "people to people" exchanges approved by the U.S. Treasury Department. The upshot of all this is that apart from money and free time, there's no reason why Americans can't legally travel to Cuba these days.
